Varmint LRF vs Varmint V2 LRF: What's New With The Varmint V2?

Varmint LRF vs Varmint V2 LRF: What's New With The Varmint V2?

For those familiar with the challenges of hunting, especially in low-visibility conditions, the value of a thermal imaging scope is already well understood. These tools have become essential for modern hunters, particularly when traditional optics fall short. Whether you're out before dawn or stalking prey after sunset, thermal imaging cuts through the limitations of ambient light, giving you the upper hand.

As the tech evolves, so does the ability to detect even the smallest variations in heat, providing unparalleled clarity and detail. In a field where success often hinges on visibility, thermal scopes like the AGM Varmint LRF and its successor, the Varmint V2 LRF, have become indispensable tools, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in hunting.

The Varmint LRF was pretty popular being our only thermal optic with an integrated laser range finder, but feedback from users indicated a desire for even more advanced features and capabilities. Listening to these needs, AGM set out to create the Varmint V2 LRF—a series that doesn’t just build on the original’s strengths but introduces significant upgrades that elevate the user experience to a new level.

The goal of this article is to provide a clear and detailed comparison of the AGM Varmint LRF and the newly released Varmint V2 LRF thermal riflescopes. Both models have their own strengths and unique features, and understanding these differences is crucial for making an informed decision. Whether you're considering an upgrade from the original Varmint LRF or deciding between the two models for the first time, this comparison will break down the key features of each scope, side by side, so you can choose the one that best meets your specific needs.

Lets get started!

Thermal Sensor Sensitivity

  • Varmint LRF: The Varmint LRF has a 12-micron Sensor with a sensitivity rating of sub-35 milikelvin.

  • Varmint V2 LRF: The Varmint V2 LRF has a different upgraded 12-micron sensor with a sensitivity rating of sub-20 milikelvin.

Winner: The numbers and ratings can be a bit confusing for those new to thermal technology, but a thermal optics sensor is rated based on its ability to detect temperature differences. The smaller the sensitivity rating the better, because that means the optic can detect much smaller/tighter variations in temperature giving you a more detailed image.

By this criteria, the Varmint V2 LRF wins with is sub-20 milikelvin sensitivity rating.

Display Quality

  • Varmint LRF: The Varmint LRF comes equipped with a standard 1024x768, 0.39-inch, OLED display screen

  • Varmint V2 LRF: The Varmint V2 LRF comes with the same 1024x768, 0.39 inch, OLED display screen

Winner: Although both optics use the same display, the Varmint V2 LRF will have a much better display quality because of its upgraded thermal sensor. The image output will appear more detailed giving you better identification capabilities because each individual pixel on the screen is being utilized to display those very small temperature differences.

Laser Rangefinder and Ballistic Calculator

  • Varmint LRF: The original model came equipped with the 600 yard laser range finder.

  • Varmint V2 LRF: The new V2 also comes with a 600 yard laser range finder along with an upgraded processor and a firmware update that allows the use of a Ballistic Calculator to work in conjunction with the laser range finder.

Winner: With the added Ballistic Calculator, the Varmint V2 LRF can’t be beat. After entering in all your ballistic data and enabling the feature, once you fire the laser range finder it will automatically adjust your holder reticle to compensate for the distance change.

Power and Battery Life

  • Varmint LRF: Equipped with swappable 18650 batteries and charger, the Varmint LRF models had an average battery life of 4.5 hours.

  • Varmint V2 LRF: The Varmint V2 also comes with the same 18650 batteries and charger but its updated efficiency gives this product line an average battery life of 5-6 hours on one 18650 battery.

Winner: The Varmint V2 LRF provides a longer battery life through its use of more efficient internal electronics.. The battery compartment and cover are the same on both models making it super quick and easy to swap out the 18650 battery for a fresh one.

Video Recording and Wi-Fi

  • Varmint LRF: The Varmint LRF comes with the ability to record video and photo using the scope or through the AGM connect app.

  • Varmint V2 LRF: Enhanced features like recoil-activated video and video recording with sound have been added to the Varmint V2 LRF

Winner: In the heat of the moment, its easy to forget to press record. With shot activated recording added as a feature in the Varmint V2, you won’t have to worry about those miss opportunities.
Sound recording also makes this Varmint V2 LRF the winner. Many hunters have found sound recording to be helpful for a number of reasons such as looking back over footage to recall which sound they were using on their coyote call, or even just to listen to the commentary from yourself and your hunting buddies.

Form and Construction

  • Varmint LRF: Built with an aluminum housing an overmolded panels, the Varmint LRF comes with the IP67 Waterproof rating. With a red power button and the traditional AGM Emblem on the side.

  • Varmint V2 LRF: The Varmint V2 LRF looks incredibly similar to the original Varmint, but comes equipped with an updated focus ring making it easer to use with gloves or in wet climates. The overmolded emblem and button has been updated to a grey color.

Winner: This one is up to you! Do you prefer the old look on the Varmint LRF, or the updated look on the Varmint V2?

Final Recommendation: Why the Varmint V2 LRF Stands Out

If you’re looking for the latest in thermal imaging technology, the Varmint V2 LRF clearly outshines its predecessor with its advanced features and enhanced performance. The improvements in thermal sensitivity, the addition of a ballistic calculator, and the convenience of recoil-activated video make the Varmint V2 LRF a top choice for hunters who demand the best from their equipment.

Choosing Based on Your Needs

That said, the best choice always comes down to your specific needs and preferences. If you’re already satisfied with the performance of the original Varmint LRF and don’t require the advanced features of the V2, sticking with the original might be the right call. Especially when it comes to budget considerations. With the release of the Varmint V2 LRF, the original Varmint LRF models can be found at a lower price while they’re still available.
However, if you’re seeking the latest technology and want a scope that offers more precision, convenience, and reliability in the field, the Varmint V2 LRF is an excellent investment that will serve you well in a variety of hunting scenarios.
